The Festival Palace - Salzburg

The Large Festival Hall was built in 1960 to plans designed by the architect Clemens Holzmeister. It is easily one of the most impressive of all the venues for the Salzburg festival. To build the hall, over 55m² of rock had to be hewn out of the Mönschberg to make room for the backstage area. There is a plethora of fantastic artwork at this venue, including works by Rudolf Hoflehner and Arno Lehmann. It is one of the largest opera houses in the world, and was opened by Herbert von Karajan himself, with a performance of ""Rosenkavalier"". In a nod to the building's former use, you will find that the floor is decorated with mosaics of horses' heads, as this was once the Royal Stables. The Festival Hall is an opera house for art lovers!
