Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (Duomo) - Florence

At over 500 feet long, the Duomo ranks amongst the four largest churches in Europe. Above all however ,it is famous for its vast dome, which was first envisaged in about the year 1300 by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio. A century later in about 1420, the young and inspired Brunelleschi sought to recreate the rationality of antiquity in architecture. He invented perspective and re-discovered many other long-lost tools of art abandoned since Roman times. He amassed all the research available and in 1436 built this magnificent dome. We can go so far as to say that this dome marks the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Not to be missed!
