Ponte Vecchio and the Vasari Corridor - Florence

The Ponte Vecchio was the very first bridge in Florence. It was built from wood by the Romans who settled in Florence in about 50 BC. Nowadays, as in the past, it is home to a row of shops on both sides. In fact, to avoid passing in front of them, the Grand Dukes of Tuscany built a raised walkway above the bridge, leading from the Uffizi -their offices at the time - to their residence, the Pitti Palace. In the centre of the bridge you'll see a sculpted bust of the goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini, which dates from 1900.
