Pitti Palace - Florence

This imposing 15th century palace was originally designed for the Pitti family, however the Medicis lost no time in appropriating it for themselves. It is home to 5 museums: the Gallery of Modern Art, the Costume Gallery, the Porcelain Museum, The Silver Museum and finally the famous Palatine Gallery, where paintings acquired by the Medicis are on display. These include works by the great masters such as Raphael, Rubens, Titian and many others. Behind the Pitti Palace lie the elegant Boboli Gardens. The fountains, basins, geometrically ordered plantations and tree-lined terraces form a typically Renaissance setting. An artificial grotto adds an unusual touch to the grounds. The star shaped Belvedere Fortress stands at the top of the hill.
