Old Town - Salzburg

The Alter Markt is the main city square in Salzburg. Since the early 13th century it has been used as a trading place, and the city's weekly market was held here until the mid 19th century. In it's centre you will find the lovely St Florian fountain, which was constructed in 1488 to replace the old ornamental fountain. It has since been added to and improved including the water basin, which was made by Adolf Guppenberger in 1583. You will find the city of Salzburg's coat of arms on the column of the fountain, and a statue of St Florian von Lorch atop the fountain, which was sculpted by Josef Anton Pfaffinger in 1743. The square itself is bordered by old Burgher houses, and you will find many of Salzburg's most famous sites close by, including the legendary Tomaselli café, which is an excellent place to relax and do a bit of people spotting!
