Mozart Square - Salzburg

On Mozartplatz you will find a monument to the composer, by Ludwig Schwanthaler, which was unveiled in September 1842. Here you will also find a beautiful Roman mosaic which was uncovered during excavations for the monument. King Ludwig I of Bavaria himself was said to be such a fan of the composer that he paid for much of the removing the previous statue and fountain on the square, and donated the marble plinth which the statue stands on. Whilst his sons were in attendance at the unveiling of the statue, unfortunately Mozart's widow passed away just months before.
