Marriage Fountain - Vienna

The Vermählungsbrunne, the wedding fountain, also known as Josefsbrunner on Hoher Markt square is one of the most important Baroque era memorial fountains. Today you will find a memorial in stone and bronze. The original was made of wood, and was commissioned by the Emperor Leopold I when his son returned from the war unscathed. The Josefssaüle monument is dedicated to the Jesus’ parent’s marriage. On the front of the pedestal there is a relief, with the Latin inscription “Divo Josepho e Davidica stirpe/ Deiparae virginis viro/ Christi servatoris nutritio/ praesentissimo Austriae patrono/ nuncupatum Leopuoldo et Josepho Augg/ votum / Carolus VI. Rom. Imp. et Hispan. Rex/ A patre ac fratre adumbratum opus/ Aere ac marmpore de Integro extruens/ M.L. / Cura suprema aedif. caes. praef. Gundac. com. Ab Althann Ano 1732” in honour of Joespeh.
