Loggia del Mercato Nuovo - Florence

Element of the Medici Florence, the loggia was ordered by Cosimo I around mid-XVIeme si├Ęcle. It also bears the name of Loggia del Porcellino because of the Fontana del Porcellino (Fountain of the Piglet). The bronze sculpture is in fact a boar made in the XVIIth century copied from an hellenistic model. The original statue is now at the Palazzo Pitti and the antique one at the Uffizis. It is said that touching its snout may bring you luck.

The rectangular plan of the loggia was conceived by Giovanni Battista del Tasso. The loggia hosts today a quite busy market selling leather products, scarves, souvenirs and clothes. Close to the loggia is the Palagio di Parte Guelfa built in the XIVth century and enlarged in the XVth century. It was the main site for Calcio Storico.
