Loggia del Bigallo - Florence

The loggia was built in the 14th century to shelter lost or abandoned children and orphans in the hope that they would be adopted by wealthy families. For a family with no heirs, adoption provided the means to continue their line. It was the Church that cared for these children, which explains why the loggia is situated on the Piazza del Duomo.
