Loggia dei Lanzi - Florence

This loggia is a vast and elegant Gothic style monument dating from the late 14th century. The rooftop balustrade and hanging gardens were added at the end of the 16th century. A loggia is a typical structure to be found on an Italian square. In this instance, it’s linked directly to the government palace and could therefore be used for civic meetings. It allowed magistrates to walk to the palace to conduct their business, sheltered from the elements but in full public view. The Loggia is now home to some magnificent sculptures dating from the Roman period up to the 19th century, including statues by Cellini and Giambologna.
