Leopoldskron Castle - Salzburg

The Leopoldskron Palace was built in 1736 by Prince Archbishop Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian as his family home, and is one of the most spectacular Roccoco buildings in Salzburg. The grandiose palace was most famously used as part of the set for the Sound of Music, as the Von Trapp family home. It was bought in 1918 by Max Reinhardt, the founder of the Salzburg Festival, and after his death it was bought by the Salzburg Foundation, a not for profit organisation who use the palace as a meeting place for conferences and meetings. As such, the palace itself is no longer open to the public and can only be admired from across the little lake it stands by, but the lake and the surrounding gardens are worth a visit if you have extra time on your hands, or if you are a true Sound of Music buff.
