Johann Strauß's Appartment - Vienna

Johann Strauss Jnr’s apartment on Praterstraβe has been a museum since 1978- after all it was here that he composed his famous waltz! After all his success, it is no surprise that the Johann Strauss junior was his father’s greatest competitor! He started his career as a composer and conductor of military music and dances, later improving the reputation of this kind of operetta. It is surely down to his ability to present himself in a good light that he became the most popular composer of the era! Even his turbulent private life was tolerated: he was married three times, to three very different women, and these events were a delight to the sensational journalists of the day. Johann Strauss Jnr always had a very close affinity to the Leopolstadt area of the city: his parents, brothers and later sister in laws and their children all lived very close to him. The most famous composition be written by Johann Strauss Jnr in the apartment on Praterstraβe is the “An der schönen blauen Donau” (The Beautiful Blue Danube) Waltz, Op.314, the unofficial Austrian national anthem.
