Hofburg - Vienna

The imposing façade of the Hofburg takes up the majority of Michaelerplatz square, which is unsurprising, when you consider that for a very long time -1438 to 1583 and 1612 to 1806- it was the residence of the Kings and Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, and then the Emperors of Austria until 1918. Today, it is the official residence of the Austrian Federal President. The façade is concave, and follows the shape of the square exactly, thus accentuating the middle of the building, and its three entrances. The central entranceway was for riders and coaches and those to the left and right for pedestrians. This Roman style of entrances is very popular, and you can find it in all the old palaces in Europe. Pay special attention to the sculptures at the entrances, they have been carefully chosen, and present sophisticated themes. In the Hofburg you will find the Sisi Museum, a museum which documents the life of the famous Empress, the Kaiserappartements, the apartments for Court officials and the private apartments of the Imperial Family and the Silberkammer, which displays the Imperial crockery and bed linen.
