Guido Gezelle Square - Bruges

While the small Guido Gezelle square is nothing special in itself, it gives us the chance to spend a moment discussing its namesake, whose statue appears on the square. This Bruges-born priest lived in the 19th century and was one of the first great Flemish poets, credited with giving the Flemish language respectability. Up until then, authors all wrote in French since Flemish was considered to be an inferior language, better suited to peasants than educated people. Guido Gezelle, however, knew how to bring out its beauty and music in his poems.
