Church of Saint James - Bruges

This church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater, the disciple of Christ who is said to have evangelised Spain and whose remains now lie in the celebrated city of Santiago de Compostela. Bruges itself was an important port of call for pilgrims following the Way of Saint James from the North. A church has stood on this spot since the 13th century, when it was an independent parish. Throughout its history, it received many donations which financed its expansion and refurbishment. You are sure to find its interior particularly surprising, partly because of its size but also because of the wealth of its furnishings. Striking examples of this include the large, black and white marble rood screen that blocks the view of the chancel and supports the weight of the organ which stands above it, as well as a great carved wooden pulpit that dates back to the baroque period.
