Burgtheater - Vienna

The Burgtheater, which was inaugurated in 1748, is the work of architects Karl von Hasenauer and Gottfried Semper. It is the most noble stage in Vienna, apart from the Opera. The Burgtheater is made up of 3 parts- the main building which houses the performance hall, and two long wings. Even today, the theatre- along with music, of course- is one of the greatest passions of the Viennese. Many Austrian authors also wrote for the theatre, among them Hermann Broch, Thomas Bernardt, Peter Handke, Arthur Schnitzler and Elfriede Jelinek- who received the Nobel Literature prize in 2004. The performances are fantastic, but even the building alone is worth a visit! A great way to spend an evening in Vienna.
