Brancacci Chapel - Florence

The Brancacci Chapel is located in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine. It is renowned for its frescos by Filippino Lippi, Masolino, and in particular his gifted pupil Masaccio, who is considered to be the greatest painter of the early Renaissance. Before that time, Gothic painting depicted function and symbolism. Masaccio however, painted lavishly, giving his subjects a more realist form and even managing to add a psychological dimension. The most famous scene in the chapel is the ""Expulsion from the Garden of Eden"" where the distress of Eve is amazingly life-like. In fact all the panels that will impress you here will undoubtedly be those of Masaccio. His brilliant but all too brief career ended in 1428 at the age of 28.
