The history of Vietnam ... in outline


Not easy to summarize the rich history of Vietnam in a few lines ... however, it is always interesting to be aware of the major events that have marked the history of the country that we visit. To us then we dive deeper into the periods that excite us.

The ancient period:
  • In the Neolithic, several peoples settled in the Red River basin, that's brewing Muong, Viet, Chinese ... which will create the kingdom of Nam Viet founded in 208 BC.
  • It will remain under Chinese rule until Xéme century when Quen Ngo founded the first national dynasty, the country is modernizing and adopts a tangerine and feudal organization but it will get real independence from China in 1428 .
  • Le Loi pushing the Chinese out of Vietnam and founded the dynasty of the posterior Le.

    The modern period:
    • Until the XVIII century stately different clans clash. The Tay Son brothers (North) take power on Nguyen (South) and Trinh (North), but with the help of the French, Emperor Gia Long of the Nguyen clan took power and founded the empire Vietnam.
    • The French took power in Cochin and over Annam and Tonkin in the late XIX century.

      The contemporary period:
      • Various nationalist movements trying to do from the French but this is Japan in 1945 which ended French rule.
      • The Emperor Bao Dai is then forced to abdicate.
      • Indochina War between France to the Vietminh. The defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 lead to the Geneva agreements that recognize the independence of Vietnam and divides the country into two: the south the Republic of Vietnam headed by Ngo Dinh Diem and northern Democratic Republic of Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh.
      • After the assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963, the US intervene in the south to prevent the Communists from taking power. This is the beginning of the Vietnam war which will end in 1975 with the departure of the Americans.
      • Vietnam reunited in 1976 and joined the UN in 1977. The country is in conflict with China from 1979 to 1991 and Cambodia from 1978 to 1989.
      • Vietnam is still a socialist republic.
