The history of Singapore ... broadly


Not easy to summarize the history of Singapor few lines ... however, it is always interesting to be aware of the major events that have marked the history of the city that we are visiting. To us then we dive deeper into the periods that excite us.

Up XIX:
  • The island of Singapore is sparsely populated before the XIXth century.
  • In 1685, she joined the Dutch colonial empire and from 1810 to 1811 it was occupied by Britain at the same time as Malaysia and Indonesia. With the Treaty of Vienna, Singapore and Malaysia came under British control.

    The nineteenth:

      • In 1959, Singapore has an own constitution and Lee Kuan Yew was elected Prime Minister.
      • Singapore joined in 1963 the federation of states of Malaysia but trouble broke out between Malays and Chinese, Singapore's independence was proclaimed in 1965.
      • Singapore then becomes a model of economic success, the city-state has become one of the most prosperous states in the region.
