Venus and Rome Temple - Roma

The construction of the Temple of Venus and Rome was ordered by Hadrian. It was inaugurated in 135 and completed by Antoninus in 140. It was built upon the site of the ancient Nero's atrium of the Golden House. The building was separated in two parts, one dedicated to personified Rome and the other to Venus, mother of Aeneas, father of Romulus and Remus. However, the vault was made during the reign of Maxentius who wanted to restore it after the fire that occurred in 283. The best preserved building part is the ancient convent of the Santa Francesca Romana church with its porphyry columns and its polychromatic marble floor. Of the double portico that fenced the temple only remain few vestiges.
