The Regia - Rome

The Regia is one of the oldest structures of the Roman Forum and functioned as the residence of the kings of Rome and later the office of the high priest of Roman religion. It occupied an area between the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Divus Julius and Temple of Antoninus and Faustina in the Forum Romanum. . Important archives of the pontifices were kept here, the formulas of all kinds of prayers, vows, sacrifices, etc., the state calendar of sacred days, the Annales- the record of events of each year for public reference- and the laws relating to marriage, death, wills, etc. Today only the foundations of the Regia remain, although it is likely that the original building was rebuilt in a different location having being destroyed by earthquake, fire or riots.
