The Mausoleum of Hadrian - Rome

The Castel Sant'Angelo stands on the site of the ancient Mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. His successors until Caracalla in the 3rd century were also buried here. The site was subsequently transformed into a fortress by the Popes from the 6th century onwards. Nowadays the castle provides us both with a bastioned fortress and a Renaissance palace with its numerous rooms and apartment richly decorated with frescos and stuccowork. If you visit, be sure to take the parapet walk which offers magnificent views over the Eternal City.
