The Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains - Rome

The Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains is the work of one of the greatest Roman architects of the 17th century, Francesco Borromini, the eternal rival of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Confronted by both financial difficulties and a cramped and difficult site, Borromini designed a church so narrow that it was said to be able to fit into a single pillar of Saint Peter’s Basilica. However the inside of the church offers - thanks to its Baroque style - an illusion of grandeur, with a magnificent dome which appears to float in the air.
