Santa Maria della Pace - Rome

The Church of Santa Maria della Pace is a combination of an original commission by Pope Sixtus IV in the late 15th century and a 17th century reconstruction completed by Pietro da Cortona. The Baroque, theatrical fa├žade is attributed to this artist and the interior boasts a rich decor. Of particular note is the master altar by Carlo Maderno which encloses an icon of the Virgin and Child, frescos by Raphael, Rosso Fiorentino and Baldassare Peruzzi and marble taken from the temple of Jupiter on Capitoline Hill. However the most interesting feature is probably the Bramante cloister with its 2 storeys of arcades which he designed at the very beginning of the 16th century.
