Santa Maria del Popolo Church - Rome

Santa Maria del Popolo Church is located to the North of the Piazza del Popolo and is renowned for its magnificent works of art. Initially, at the very end of the 11th century is was just a simple chapel built on the site of the tomb of Nero. The church was enlarged in the 13th century and then more extensively modified during the Renaissance and in the 17th century under the direction of Bernini and Bramante. The latter also designed the apse we see here today. The interior is home to tombs of Cardinals, the Chigi Chapel designed by Raphael and completed by Bernini with its unusual mosaic of skeletons, canvases by Caravaggio and a magnificent altarpiece entitled the Assumption of the Virgin by Annibale Carracci.
