Sant' Anselmo all'Aventino - Rome


Sant' Anselmo all'Aventino is a church, monastery and college dedicated to Saint Anselm, often called the founder of scholasticism. It is the seat of the Abbot Primate of the Federation of ‘Black Monks’ and the International College of Sant’ Anselmo is located here. Built in 1900, this church is a prime example of the interest there existed at the beginning of the 20th century for Paleochristian art. It church has a basilica plan, and its mosaics have only the figures in mosaic and no background. In the atrium, there is a 20th century bronze statue of Saint Anselm himself. The pretty courtyard and impressive colonnades offer a retreat from the busy city complete with impressive views. A gift shop on the premises sells products made by the monks.
