Sainte Catherine Market - Barcelona

The Santa Caterina Market, located in the La Ribera district, was destroyed in 1998 leading to the discovery of the foundations of a large medieval monastery. Entirely renovated in 2005 by the architect Enric Miralles, its structure is modern and typical of Barcelona, and the roof is rather original - in the form of waves, with the sunlight piercing through, and 200,000 ceramic tiles creating a mosaic of vegetables. Inside the market, you'll find stalls stacked with fresh produce from the region, including fruit, vegetables, flowers, fish and meat. If you're feeling peckish, the market has a tapas bar and restaurant, where you can sit and admire the market's marvellous architecture and observe this hive of activity.
