Saint Mark's Basilica - Rome

The Basilica of San Marco in Rome is certainly less famous than that of Venice. It overlooks the Piazza San Marco but in fact is part of the architectural complex of the Venice Palace. Its foundations date back to the 4th century but the present church was built much later. It has a Romanesque bell tower, Renaissance façade, Baroque interior and on the dome of the apse, a magnificent Byzantine style mosaic dating from the 9th century. It depicts Christ accompanied by his saints and Pope Gregory the IV who reigned from 827 to 844.
