Porta San Paolo - Rome

The Porta San Paolo is one of the ancient gates of Rome. It is situated to the south of the Aventine Hill and opens onto the Via Ostiense which once led to Ostia, the Ancient commercial harbour town. This gate and particularly its defences consisting of an archway between two large, crenelated keeps, has been well preserved. The whole structure dotted with small windows, was built in the 3rd century and later integrated into the 18 kilometres of the Aurelian Wall when it was built in the 270s.
