Porta Maggiore - Rome

The Porta Maggiore, also known as the Porta Prenestina, was built by Emperor Claudius in 52 AD. Its arches supported the Aqua Claudia and the Aqua Anio Novus aqueducts built one above the other, so permitting them to flow across the two avenues below. The whole structure, measuring more than 10 metres wide by almost 24 metres high, was subsequently integrated into the Aurelian Wall, built in the 270s.
