Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere - Rome

The Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is at the heart of the Trastevere district and is representative of typical life in Rome with its families, tourists, local kids enjoying themselves and the sale of traditional arts and crafts. Apart from the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere the square is also home to a lovely Roman fountain that was restored at the end of the 17th century by Carlo Fontana. This fountain is a reminder of the legend that on the day of Christ's birth oil gushed from the ground here and flowed towards the River Tiber all day long. However it is above all the splendid Romanesque fa├žade of the Basilica and its mosaic of the Virgin and Child with the Saints that will attract your attention.
