Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major - Rome

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is one of the Patriarchal Basilicas of Rome and is the only one to have kept its original structure. Built sometime during the 5th century, the church has retained its position as a Marian shrine par excellence for nearly sixteen centuries and each year attracts many pilgrims who flock to Rome to pay homage to the virgin and also to experience the beauty and grandeur of the basilica. The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major is also particularly special as it is home to many artistic treasures, including 5th century mosaics depicting stories from the Old Testament, frescoes by the Baroque painter Guido Reni and the Salus Populi Romani, a much venerated early icon of the Virgin and Child.
