Palace of the Archbisop - Prague

Located on Hradcanske or Castle Square, the Archbishop’s Palace a gift from Ferdinand I in 1562 to the first archbishop to return to Prague after the Hussite wars. After 1620 it became a symbol of the Church’s power in the country. The façade is classical and bright. That being said, there is nevertheless a degree of movement in the alternating columns and pilasters. The discrete, flat-columned pilasters provide a rhythm and lighten the façade. The voluminous columns on the other hand draw the eye towards the centre and the line of force in the facade. The upper section is decorated with some magnificent Rococo features added in 1760.
