Colosseum - Roma

The Colloseum, or Flavian amphiteatre was built around 70 during Vespasian's reign on the site of the artificial lake of Nero's Domus Aurea. It was inaugurated in 80 by the Emperor Titus who celebrated the event by organizing a 3 month game series. The 52 metre high Colosseum could host up to 50,000 people at the same time. Gladiator fights (the last one took place in 438), hunts and capital executions were held there. Then, some of the stones were used for the construction of bridges and other types of monuments.

To see: the stands, the four storeys with different capital columns (Tuscan, Ionic and Corinthians), the outer pilasters, the arena, the underground corridors.
