Church of San Giorgio in Velabro - Rome

The Basilica of San Giorgio in Velabro dates back to the 7th century. The church standing here today no longer has a clear plan because of the numerous modifications and renovations it has known over the centuries. The most significant renovation dates from the 13th century when a portico and a campanile were added as were frescos by Pietro Cavallini in the apse. In the early 20th century Antonio Muñoz undertook a restoration programme intended to restore its medieval character by freeing it from much of the later additions.
