Chiesa Nuova - Rome

Built at the end of the 16th century, the New Church or Chiesa Nuova is located at the heart of Baroque Rome along the Corso Victor Emmanuel II. The church is part of a large complex which also included a library, convent and chapel built for the congregation of the Oratory of Filippo de Neri. The church is noticeable for its radiant white alabaster fa├žade which was in keeping with the simple taste of the Saint himself. The interior is home to numerous works of art by Caravaggio, Rubens, Federico Barocci and Pietro da Cortona. The initial simplicity of the interior was later complemented with the gold and stuccowork of the Counter Reformation and the degree of embellishment we find here is an indication of the popularity of the congregation's founder.
