Casa Batllo - Barcelona

The Casa Battlo has been registered on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2005. Located in the Manzana de la Discordia (block of discord), thus it was named because of the presence of three edifices realized by three of the best architects of modern Barcelona, Puig i Cadafach, Domènech i Montaner and Gaudi. Described by Salvador Dali as "a house which came out of the waters of a peaceful lake" and compared to the series of "Nymphéas" by Claude Monet, the Battlo house is part of Antonio Gaudi's architectural fantasies. This work is the result of the radical modification of a building made in 1887 belonging to the textile industrialist Josep Battlo i Casanovas. Gaudi modified the lower part of the façade by adding a structure of white stone from Montjuïc. This new undulating structure was inspired by organic forms and comprises small slender columns that look like bones. Gaudi also added remarkable moulded iron balconies shaped like masks. All the façade is covered with glass mosaic and cold-coloured ceramic discs, giving the house an aqueous aspect. The roof, standing on attics made of parabolic arches, was covered with glazed earthenware scales, still made with a cold chromatic range. On one side, a small bulbous tower crowned with a six-limbed cross brings the finishing touch to the innovating modification of the building's façade. Inside, Gaudi shows once again his revolutionnary vision of space. He changed the interior of the house into a fluid, undulating space where the artist blew in his surprizing geometrical vision of forms. Gaudi specially created for the owner's residence a series of furniture pieces inspired by natural forms and conceived under ergonomic concepts after which wood is considered a soft matter. The furniture is now kept at the Casa Gaudi museum. With the project for the Battlo house, Gaudi also showed his respect for adjacent buildings. To the left, in order not to trouble the Atmaller house by Puig i Cadafach, he shortened the fifth floor façade and added a moulding on both sides to harmonize the buildings' aspects. Unfortunately, the heightening by two storeys of the building to the right has a negative effect on the overall aspect.
