Bretfeld Palace - Prague
Built by Jean-Joseph Wirch in 1765, the façade of Bretfeld Palace is of little interest. This illustrates how times had changed. Gone were the vast and showy façades of the victorious soldiers of the 17th century. The 18th century was a time for conversation, literary salons and drawing-room philosophy. Since conversation was supposed to be profound, a showy façade would have indicated the owner’s lack of finesse. In the late 18th century Bretfeld Palace was indeed a very fashionable address. It is said that 2 giants of the world of music and literature - Mozart and Casanova - once met there.
