Basilica dei Santi Cosma e Damiano - Rome

The basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano is located close to the Roman Forum in the Forum of Vespasian - also known as the Forum of Peace. It is the result of the unification of the library of the Forum of Peace and a portion of the Temple of Romulus by Pope Felix IV in 527, who subsequently Christianised the resulting basilica and devoted it to two Greek brothers and saints, Cosmas and Damian. The building has been restored in 1682 under Pope Urban VIII and much later in 1947 as part of the restorations of the Imperial Forums. Inside, the Basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano retains some of the original marble paving of the Forum of Peace and a stunning 6th century apse mosaic in the Byzantine style depicting the Second Coming of Christ. It is illuminated by a coin-operated light and is the inspiration for many later mosaics.

Open daily from 8 am - 1 pm and then from 3 pm - 7 pm.
