The former residence of King Carlos I and his spouse Isabela de Portugal became, at the initiative of Dona Juana, daughter of the emperor and sister of Felipe II, a Franciscan monastery. The refurbishments for the transformation of the residence into a convent started in 1556 and finished in 1573. The austere plateresque façade was the residence's original. In the XVIIIth century, the former residence court was modified by Francesco Sabatini, king Carlos III's favourite architect. The fenced monatery contains a real artistic treasure, namely paintings by Tiziano, Coello, Murillo, Zurbaran, Brueghel, Ribera. Dona Juana's sepulchre, made by Pompeyo Leoni and the magnificient tapestry collection by Rubens were given to the monastery by Isabel Clara Eugenia, daughter of Philip II, Netherland's governor. The monastery of Descalzas Reales is a real havenof peace in the middle of a 3 million inhabitant city, a miracle of silence and quietness in one of the most animated in Madrid. A hard to find atmosphere nowadays. The sensation is worth seeing.
