Jeronimos monastery

|
The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful religious monuments in the world. The monastery, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage, is located in the Belèm district, in Lisbon's west side. Built between 1496 and 1572, it is the Manuel era masterpiece. It was largely financed by the selling of the treasure, mostly spices and jewels, brought back by Vasco de Gama from the New World. The church of Santa Maria, adjacent to the monastery, houses tombs of great Portuguese men such as Vasco de Gama and the poet Luis de Camoes. The profusion of details within the cloister made of two superimposed galleries is a real marvel and an outstanding example of artistic talent of the era. |
