This square, built in 1784 around the two Ledoux pavilions, was placed within the Fermiers Généraux wall (the pavilions were used for tax collection). Before taking this name, it was called Place de l'Enfer. Denfert-Rochereau was the name of a colonel who took part in the defence of Belfort preventing its annexation by the Germans. The statue of a lion in the centre, is a replica of the one in Belfort. The disused quarries in the square are home to the catacombs, where bones from Parisian cemeteries started to be "piled up" when the cemeteries' were closed down in 1784. It makes for a picturesque visit, not to be missed.
