With an area equal to that of the Montmartre cemetery, the Batignolles Cemetery, which opened its gates in August, 1833, is the fourth walled necropolis in the capital.
Originally, it was hardly more than 1000 m2 and stetched out over the Clichy area.
It had been created for the burial of residents of the entirely new Batignolles-Monceaux community, which had become independent of Clichy by a royal order in February 1830. It quickly became apparent that the cemetery was too small. In 1847, brought it up to an area of almost 4 hectares. Joined with the capital in 1860, it underwent later a second enlargement of approximately 7 hectares. Since then, the necropolis has remained practically unchanged which has passed over and alongside it since 1969.
Today, with its 15,000 graves, the Batignolles Cemetery is also a lovely leafy green area of 10 hectares, with 800 trees;
