The story of Milan ... broadly


Not easy to summarize the history of Milan in a few lines ... however, it is always interesting to be aware of the major events that have marked the history of the city that we are visiting. To us then we dive deeper into the periods that excite us.

Antiquity:
  • The city of Milan was founded by a Celtic tribe, Insubres.
  • It is the main city of this Aboriginal tribe before being conquered in 222 BC by the Romans. Resistance is important and the final conquest will be long.
  • In 49 BC, all residents obtain Roman citizenship.
  • In 286, Milan became the capital of the Western Roman Empire under Diocletian.
  • In 401, the Visigoths laid siege to the city without success.

    The Middle Ages:
    • Milan became an important Christian center. In the Middle Ages, Milan became the capital of the Duchy held by the Visconti family from 1263 to 1447 and then by the Sforza family.

      Renaissance:
      • The city fell into the hands of the Spaniards in 1535 and the Austrians in 1713 before joining the Cisalpine Republic under Napoleon Bonaparte.

        Nineteenth to today:
        • In 1859, Victor Emmanuel II, the future King of Italy, took control of Milan and in 1861 the city was integrated into the Kingdom of Italy.
        • In the XXth century, Milan became an industrial, financial and major economic.
