The history of Israel ... in outline


Not easy to sum up the history of Israel in a few lines ... however, it is always interesting to be aware of the major events that have marked the history of the country that we are visiting. To us then we dive deeper into the periods that excite us.

Antiquity and the Middle Ages:
  • Considered a sacred land by Jews since biblical times, the Land of Israel going after Israelite kingdoms by many hands: Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Sassanids, Byzantines, Arabs and finally Turkey.
  • Ottoman rule began in 1260 and ends after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.

    contemporary time:
    • In 1917, Palestine came under British mandate. The Zionist aspirations are strong at this time but it was not until 1947 that the UN vote on partition plan of Palestine into two states: a Jewish state and an Arab state. The day after the vote the civil war broke out in Palestine.
    • The Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel was announced May 14, 1948 by David Ben Gurion Prime Minister of the new state. The neighboring Arab countries invaded Palestine on the same day.
    • The first Israeli-Arab war of 1948 and 1949, resulting in an enlargement of the territory of Israel signed separate armistice agreements with Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and then Syria.
    • In the following years 725,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled Israeli territory and 900,000 Jews from Arab countries to compel exile which 600 000 in Israel.
    • The partition of Palestine plan is constantly evolving in sandstone Arab-Israeli wars, attempted peace plan are many, but the situation is crystallized.
    • Today, most countries of the world have recognized the state of Israel with the exception of most countries of the Arab-Muslim world.
